About 320 years ago, a 46-year-old man and his pupil visited Toyama called Etchu in those days. According to his pupil's diary, they passed through here on August 27th by the solar calender. It was so hot that the master didn't feel well. To make matters worse, there was few peole in Etchu that could understand the master, his journey or life-style. So when he asked where he might stay or which way he should go, no one could make suitable advice to him. He stayed in Etchu for only two days. One night in Namerikawa and the other night in Takaoka.
Later he didn't write a lot about our lovely hometown on his well-known work titled ThE NARROW ROAD TO OKU. He allotted a few sentences and one seventeen-syllabled poem to give his impression of Etchu. He composed 3 poems in Echigo, 11 in Kaga, 5 in Echizen. Most of them were much better than in Etchu. Only one (not famous) in Etchu!
I deeply regret that our ancestors couldn't understand enough who he was. I'm also sorry that he visited in summer not in winter. He could have had a great impression from the scene in winter here.
Yes! His name is MATSUO Basho.

Sweet-smelling rice fields!
To our right as we push through,
The Ariso Sea.
